Cathedral Building Project

During our 80th Anniversary Celebrations on October 16th 2006, St. Luke's Pro-Cathedral launched its first ever 5-year Strategic Plan (SP) 2002 - 2011, a blueprint whose goal was to "Transform St. Luke’s Pro-Cathedral into a more effective, efficient and practical church, in service provision and pastoral work."

The SP set out four strategic priorities (objectives) to align the Church’s operations, namely:

  1. Providing and expanding physical space for the ministry (church).
  2. Enhancing effective leadership.
  3. Strengthening the church’s financial resources.
  4. Streamlining the church’s ministry functions.

Objective 1 therefore gave impetus to the Cathedral Construction work. It is against this backdrop that the Bishop of ACK Kitale Diocese, The Rt. Rev. Stephen Kewasis appointed a 7-member Taskforce Committee on August 29th 2010 to spearhead the planning and subsequent building of a new cathedral. The Committee then comprising of: Mrs Mary Khisa; Rev. Polycarp Meger; Mr. Alfred Kiboi; Mr. Samson Odawa; Mr. Henry Abuga; Dr. Samuel Njenga; and Mrs. Nacy Mbito was commissioned on August 30, 2010.

At its first meeting, the Taskforce Committee elected Mrs. Mary Khisa as Chair and Mrs. Nancy Mbito as Secretary. They later co-opted 5 more members, namely: Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chemengich, Mr. Yonah Adala, Mr. Aggrey Kidiavai, Mr. Gabriel Apiyo and Mrs Dorcas Kiteshuo.

As planning for the construction progressed and due to various commitments by members, the committee also co-opted Mr. Obando Ekesa in early 2010, who served as Secretary  up to February 2011, when he left Kitale due to work commitments.

However, due to various challenges, construction work did not begin until March 2012. Nonetheless, planning and fundraising work still progressed and the committee drafted a Fundraising Strategy Blueprint Document entitled, A New Beginning: St. Luke's Cathedral - Fundraising Strategies October 2010 to October 2015, which outlined the hopes and aspiration of raising money for the cathedral through various means, with a goal to complete the cathedral by October 2015.
